What is Evolution?
Evolution is when your Pokémon evolves, or changes into a new Pokémon, different than the one you just have. They can change by happiness, experience, or even stones. Some evolve once or twice, while there are
some that just stay the way they are.
Experience Evolution
Your Pokémon gain experience points (or EXP) whenever you defeat an opponent's Pokémon. The more tougher the opponent is, the more EXP you'll gain. Your Pokémon might evolve after advancing the next level. This will give
your Pokémon's stats a little boost, so they'll be must stronger than before, but they will learn moves much later than the basic form. If you don't want your Pokémon to evolve, just press "B" when it shows the evoltion.
Then it won't try to evolve until it reaches the next level. An example is when Charmander evolves. Charmander evolves at lv. 16. When it reaches that level, it will evolve into Charmeleon, a stronger form of Charmander.
When Charmeleon reaches lv. 36, it will evolve into a powerful Charizard. This is one Pokémon that evolves two times. A Pokémon like Farfetch'd doesn't evolve at all, no matter what you do. What you see is what you get!
Link Trade Evolution
Some specific Pokémon will evolve after you trade it to a friend through link cable. When they evolve, the trainer that recieves the traded Pokémon that evolves gets credit for capturing it. If you want your Pokémon back in
evolved form, trade it back. Pokémon sent like Kadabra and Haunter will not be able to stop evolution once it has been traded. Some Pokémon in Gold/Silver/Crystal evolve by trading the Pokémon carrying a special item. Look
for it in the Complete Item List page. You should evolve these Pokémon as soon as possible, since they all learn the moves in the same time as their basic form. It won't make a
difference, but it's just that it's a new, more powerful Pokémon to have.
Pokémon that evolve from trading regularly: Kadabra, Haunter, Machoke, Graveler
Stone Evolution
There are special stones that you can use to evolve Pokémon. Unlike training for EXP, you can use these stones anytime you'd like, but once you've used it, you cannot stop evolution after that. To find out more about these
stones, go to the Evolution Stones page.
Happiness Evoltuion
A New feature from Gold/Silver/Crystal. If you can tame your Pokémon well enough, it will evolve just because it's happy to be with you. They must be REALLY REALLY HAPPY! There's going to be a page about it pretty soon explaining
everything about this topic.
Effects of Evolution
Evolution can be a great thing, since it greatly rises up your Pokémon's stats. Take Magikarp for example, it's stats are really low, even at lv. 19. When it reaches lv. 20, it will evolve into Gyarados, and all of it's stats greatly
rises. However, some Pokémon's stats lower after evolution. When Poliwhirl evolves into Poliwrath after using a Water Stone, it's Speed will go down. Butterfree's Defense won't be as high as Metapod's Defense was. You should evolve
Metapod though, so it can learn all of the new moves that Butterfree can learn. Poliwhirl doesn't matter because it will learn it's own moves, but after evolving into Poliwrath, Poliwrath won't learn any more moves.
